In the ever-growing wellness industry, retreats are evolving into transformative experiences that not only rejuvenate the body and mind but also empower individuals to take home lasting tools for personal growth. Among these tools, breathwork has emerged as a powerful practice that integrates the physiological, emotional, and psychological dimensions of healing. In November 2024, as part of my 400-hour trauma informed breathwork facilitator training, I visited Sayulita, Mexico for a Breathwrok retreat, where trainees led participants in transformative, guided sessions. Being able to conduct breathwork sessions and be involved as a participant offered hands-on education and deeply meaningful experiences for all, in one complete and fulfilling week.

The Power of Breathwork: Healing from Within
How beautiful to enjoy a retreat where participants not only immerse themselves in a peaceful environment, but engage in conscious connected breathwork, a technique that fosters emotional release, mental clarity, and physical healing. Breathwork is like personalized therapy, even in a group setting, giving breather exactly what they need, such as anxiety management, self-awareness, or simply relaxation. At the retreat we all witnessed the releasing of blocks that hinder one’s well-being. What set this retreat apart is that the facilitators were my fellow colleagues, working towards their own facilitator certification.
Trainee-Led Sessions: A Unique Learning Experience
Breathwork trainees—those who have gone through intense training themselves—are uniquely positioned to facilitate such sessions. Unlike a traditional instructor-student dynamic, the trainee-leaders bring their personal journey of transformation and healing into their teachings. This shared experience adds an authenticity and empathy to the sessions as the facilitators have engaged in many breathwork sessions themselves and have personally navigated the profound shifts that breathwork can inspire. The retreat offered the opportunity to lead participants and each other through structured thematic sessions to release tension, connect deeply with the present moment, and unlock one’s unique gifts.

During this retreat model innovatively orchestrated by Megan Ashton, founder of Unity Breathwork, trainees took the lead in holding space for groups through exercises, offering gentle cues, and facilitating discussion.
They shared their insights, challenges, and breakthroughs, creating a vulnerable and safe environment where participants could be open to going deeper. The mentorship model offered by Megan provided a sense of connection, ensuring that trainees and participants felt supported, guided, and heard throughout their journey.
My Path to Healing and Self-Mastery

Breathwork is a practice with deep roots in ancient healing traditions that is gaining renewed attention due to its incredible ability to foster personal growth and healing. By incorporating breathwork training into retreats, the next generation of wellness practitioners is being empowered to share their knowledge in meaningful ways that help others unlock their potential.
